e-KYC for .in and .co.in Domain Owners

E-KYC

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

We’d like to inform you of important updates announced by NIXI (National Internet Exchange of India) regarding the registration and renewal process for .IN & .CO.IN domains.

Effective 5th of December 2025, all Public Domain Registry must comply with NIXI’s new e-KYC verification policy, which applies to both new registrations and existing .IN and .CO.IN domain holders.

Here’s some Key Updates from NIXI that you need to know:

  1. Mandatory e-KYC for all registrants
All registrants of .IN and .CO.IN domains must complete electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) verification during registrations, renewals and contact modifications.
  2. Eligibility changes for .IN  and .CO.IN registrations.
While individuals and registrants based in India can register .IN and .CO.IN names as usual, foreign registrants will have to demonstrate a valid nexus qualification to prove their right to register or continue holding their .IN and .CO.IN name.
IMPORTANT: After evaluating the legal, privacy, and operational risks from supporting .IN and .CO.IN registrations from non-Indian entities, we have decided that we will only support .IN and CO.IN registrations from Indian customers.
  3. Verification
Registrants are required to complete KYC, failure to comply will result in the domain being placed on SERVERHOLD status, making it inactive until verification is complete.
  4. Clarification on residential status
NIXI has indicated that registrations shall be restricted to individuals or organizations based in India going forward.
Existing domains from foreign registrants will be moved out of Public Domain Registry.
  5. Renewals
Renewal requests will also be subject to the updated KYC process.
Ensure registrant contact details match with submitted KYC documents to avoid disruptions.

Domains that fail KYC verification within the stipulated period will be suspended by the registry. We recommend initiating customer communication early to avoid service interruptions.
